RESIDENTS have been urged to carry out a few simple safety checks to ensure their electrical appliances are in good condition now winter is here.

Electrical Safety Office head Dr Simon Blackwood said the very first step was to check heaters and electric blankets that have been in storage during the warmer months, for obvious signs of damage or deterioration.

“Check that the product has an Australian electrical safety compliance mark and always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe use,” Dr Blackwood said.

“These products are a great comfort during cold winter nights but we should not take for granted that these items are going to still be in good working order year in year out.

“Check the electrical safety website to make sure that there has not been any safety recalls on products you may have bought in the past.

“Safety tips for winter appliances also include checking frayed cords or damaged plugs plus incorrectly stored or folded electric blankets and be aware of purchasing unsafe second hand goods.

“Remember to keep portable heaters away from flammable objects such as curtains or bedding and do not overload power points with piggyback plugs or power boards.

“It is much better to be safe than sorry. If you have any doubts, either throw these items away or have them checked by a licensed electrician. Importantly, do not attempt to fix them yourself.”
